What happens next?

Hi. I thought my daughter may have been schizophrenic (she still may be) but at the moment she has been diagnosed with drug induced psychosis and has been admitted unvoluntary to a youth mental facility. It was a very traumatic experience for her and my husband and son and of course myself. She hates me and thinks I have ruined her life. Has anyine had a simalar experience. I am wondering what will happen next? She wasn't living at home but of course when she comes out I do not want her to go back to that environment and really want her at my place. She is 20 years old. Can I force this?

Re: What happens next?

@Rover...your daughter may hate you now, but may thank you later..sometimes we have to take really difficult actions, that feel sooo wrong because it is against all that we stand for. But..if you keep visiting or calling her and especially talking about her discharge plan, and referalls to supports in the community..well maybe she may never need to be admitted again..on the other hand, sometimes it takes a lot of admissions..it depends on your daughter and on her care team's attitude and support! Good luck..and keep advocating on her behalf for information around supports available in your commu city. Drug use is a tricky one as lots of young people enjoy it..

Hi @Rover ,

Firtsly, welcome to the forums. You will find many supportive people here that can offer much helpful advice hopeful comments.

Unfortunately, I am not sure if you can enforce your daughter to stay with you, being that she is 20 years old. It's a really hard situation your are in, and I really do feel for you because I have had a similar situation happen to myself once.

What state are you in? here are some really good organisation that specialise in providing care post discharge and we may be able to give you some details here.

I also think you should try contacting the Family Drug SUpport, who provide all sorts of insights, educational material and support groups that you might find helpful. The webiste is here. There is also Parentline who can provide support, counselling and parent education over the telephone and the number is 1300 30 1300.

Does anyone else have some advice for Rover? @Alessandra1992 @PeppiPatty @MrsC

Hobbit.
